weekend in review 04/16-04/18

this past weekend I got back into brewing shape and got around to picking up some interesting bottles.

  • I swung by my new (and surprisingly well-stocked) bevmo in torrance for some goodies and walked out with more than I had anticipated.
  • they had all the new goose island brews, a good lost abbey selection (including angel’s share ’09), and even had the ever-elusive aloha plenty for a pretty decent price (6 or 7 bucks).  to think that i was kicking myself for passing up a bottle at some bootleg redondo liquor store for $12…
  • I brought the goose island sofie and a bomber of lagunitas’ wilco tango foxtrot to PR’s byob bday. I immediately fell for sofie – it had a great complexity, finish, and effervescence.  WTF was great too, it reminded me of stone 13, one of my all time favorites.
  • on sunday I decided to dust off the homebrew gear and whip up a quick batch of kolsch for some upcoming BBQs/get-togethers.
  • I stuck with my usual extract recipe but did my first full-wort boil in a turkey fryer outside.  getting to a boil was a piece of cake but cooling a full 5 gallons with my immersion chiller was an exercise in patience to say the least, especially after seeing CB’s therminator in action.
  • I gave it a minute of O2 at 75F and tossed my starter in, and the airlock was chugging away by the end of the night.

after a long week of desk jockeying, the weekend couldn’t come up fast enough.

  • after getting a little more settled in our new spot, AP and I rolled over to naja’s to meet up with AP, PP, and DP.
  • I can’t overemphasize the great atmosphere at naja’s – no pretention and a laid back attitude, right on the water!
  • not to mention great selection – I grabbed  a pour of goose island’s matilda, which was very earthy and refreshing.  AP grabbed her staple – eric’s ale.
  • once everyone showed up, the really good stuff got cracked.  first, we pulled a great bottle of fantome saison for everyone to try.
  • I also ordered up a fantastic saison that (if I remember correctly) was from brasserie d’achouffe (the tap handle was complicated and it was listed as “saison” on the board – I’ll have to get back with the name since it was pretty great).
  • there was also a north/south tasting debate going on (if only in my head) as both carlsbad’s green flash west coast IPA and healdsburg’s bear republic racer 5 were poured.  such a tough call between those two…
  • later during the weekend I tended to my fresh hop plants – in addition to last years’ vojvodina and zeus, I picked up some chinook, cascade, mt hood, and sterling varieties.
  • I got the rhizomes from freshops, and couldn’t be happier – they came fast, had noticeable buds on arrival and sprouted within a week.  however, CB had different results, however, as state agricultural problems and questionable customer service almost ruined his (sizable) order.
  • also, it will be interesting to see the yield of my second-year established plants.  I kept all my hops potted due to limited time, but if the yield is low I might reconsider next year.  fingers crossed…

a while back, while over at CB’s (where all the good bottles seem to be hiding), he cracked open a bottle of bourbon county stout from 2008, a 13% abv bourbon-barrel aged imperial stout from goose island out in chicago.

  • I remember feeling a little like a sucker last year when I shelled out $20 for a four-pack of these at bevmo when they were first released.
  • however, I found that over time this beer has received rave reviews from all the beer nerds, and seems to be pretty highly regarded.  I still remember some dude over at city beer losing it over this beer, swearing that it was the most overlooked beer of 2008 and that we should all stock up before it was too late.
  • I hate to say this, but when I cracked a bottle of this open a few months after I got em, I could barely put down a few ounces – the brew was SUPER boozy, beyond a liqueur and more like a straight shot.  bourbon infiltrated all other flavors and I actually dumped half the bottle since AP didn’t want to have anything to do with it!
  • which brings me to a week or two ago, when CB pops the cap on this sucker and all I can think about was the booze fest that went down last year.
  • however, the beer aged very well, and the alcohol was a lot more veiled.  some great oak flavor came out as well.  the beer was infinitely more drinkable than it had been just a year prior, and tasted great!  I can’t wait to see what a couple more years do to this behemoth!
