saison session 2011
motivated by the success of overcarbed’s last two strong beer sessions, and in celebration of two years of successful brew blogging, the first annual saison session was celebrated last weekend.
- the broad style characteristics and range of flavors in saisons have made the style one of my favorites, and such diversity was well represented by the beers being poured.
- commercial brews that got popped included coast-to-coast US examples such as lost abbey’s brother levonian, pretty things’ jack d’or, jolly pumpkin’s iO, and upright’s six, as well as belgian specialties such as vapeur’s folie, dupont’s avec les bons voeux, and fantome’s dalmatienne and standard saison.
- however, the real highlights of the day were the truly local offerings – AH and NM brought some choice homebrew down from SF, including a blueberry saison that the crowd couldn’t get enough of. I also poured pitchers of my house saison and had both the rye saison and patersbier on draft.
- to top it off, I smoked 16lbs of pork butt, and AP whipped up some killer slaw and spanakopita. JVG also brought down some homemade BBQ sauce to compete with AP’s house standard.
- after the smoke cleared, everyone around us fell deep into their chairs, full to the brim with BBQ, beers, and a little brewing knowledge. success!
